The contents of "Imperium: Classics" and "Imperium: Legends" are fully compatible with each other, and each can be played independently. However, playing them together allows for an expanded civilization experience.

This set, "Imperium: Classics," includes eight ancient to medieval civilizations: Carthage, Celtic, Greece, Macedonia, Persia, Rome, Scythians, Vikings.

Players each receive a deck representing their civilization and play the game. During a turn, players can perform an action "Activate," discard all cards in their hand to "Innovate," or send their unrest cards to the unrest pile to "Revolt," followed by "Organize" to replenish their hand.

Card effects vary widely, including gaining resources, playing cards onto the table, acquiring cards from a shared market, receiving unrest cards from the unrest pile instead of effects, or affecting other players' cards. Players use these abilities to develop and civilize their empires. The game ends when either the final victory condition is met or when a "Collapse" occurs in the civilization.

If the game ends by meeting the victory condition, the cards representing the empire's history serve as points. If the game ends due to a collapse, the player with the fewest unrest cards wins.

Since each civilization's cards are entirely different, strategies and paths to victory vary. This is a card game focused on developing and declining civilizations, emphasizing card abilities, deck building, resource management, and hand management.
