Instructions:
How to Adjust VU Meter:
1. Adjust the VU meter only. Mechanical return to 0 of the pointer
Not only the VU meter, but all pointer type ammeter, voltmeter, and wattmeter have a 0 adjustment screw. This can be adjusted with a slot screwdriver. To adjust, disconnect the meter from any equipment, place it horizontally, and turn this screw for turning to 0. In dry environments with low humidity, static electricity can build up a force between the meter pointer and the transparent plastic, preventing 0 adjustment. In this situation, wipe the plastic with diluted soapy water to eliminate static electricity.
Return to 0 Adjustment:
1. Connect the VU meter to the corresponding terminals on the circuit board, provide appropriate DC power supply to the VU meter drive circuit, output voltage between 7V and 12V.
2. Connect the input of the preamplifier, computer, or other equipment. Perform this operation without audio signal output or in silent mode.
3. If the VU meter pointer swings in the positive direction, adjust VR3 (VR4) to 0.
Sensitivity Adjustment:
1. Connect to a computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone for adjustment
Select suitable signal generator software, start it, output waveform with sine wave, 1kHz, and 0dB. The test signal generation software for WaveGene is particularly convenient for adjustment on a for Windows PC. At this point, adjust VR1 (VR2) to set the VU meter offset to OVU.
This circuit does not strictly compliant with the ANSI C16.5 1942 or BS6840 standards, so there is no need to strictly follow these steps. You can adjust the circuit according to the music you are listening to. Suggest setting for WaveGene to 0dB and the meter pointer to +3.
2. Use a CD player, cassette player, or digital player for adjustment
If you have an audio test CD, please use the same method as using a computer to adjust using sine wave, 1kHz, and 0dB. Cassette tape players should use specially recorded audio test tapes, while digital players should play appropriate test audio files, such as MP3 or WAV files. At least use a fixed audio signal. Input the left and right channels separately, adjust the potentiometers VR1 and VR2 to match the readings of the left and right meter.
3. Use a signal generator for adjustment:
Select a sine wave output with a frequency of 1kHz and an output voltage of 1V. Connect it to the input of the driver board, adjust potentiometers VR1 and VR2 until the pointer is at +3.
