The 75mm M1A1 Packhauser howitzer is a United States howitzer.
Originally developed as a mountain gun for use with a dead load, it was adopted by the U.S. Army in 1927.
Financial issues slowed production, and only 91 had been produced by 1940.
However, with the outbreak of World War II, mass production began in September 1940.
Production continued until December 1944, with a total of 5,288 guns produced.
Numerous variants of this gun system have been developed for various applications.
These variants essentially share the same barrel, recoil mechanism, and breech; only the gun carriage differs.
A distinctive feature of this gun is its flexible operation, including towing by a 1/4-ton truck, helicopter transport, and parachute drop.
The early M1 model could be divided into six packages, each weighing 73-107 kg.
The airborne M8 could be divided into seven packages for loading and nine packages for airdrop, and could also be carried manually if necessary.
