[What is Kurume Kasuri?] Kurume Kasuri is a cotton textile that originated in 1800 during the late Edo period in what is now Kurume City, Fukuoka Prefecture. It is made to stand out by tying the threads according to the design using a technique called "kukuri" (binding) to resist dyeing. Kurume Kasuri has many unique characteristics that make it one of a kind in the world, including: ① drawing the design on special design paper, ② the shared binding machines and the skills of binding artisans within the production cooperative, ③ the inheritance of advanced techniques for weaving warp and weft kasuri on power looms, and ④ the coexistence of indigo dyeing and chemical dyeing. It is a representative traditional craft textile of Japan that was designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan in 1957. [Characteristics of Kurume Kasuri] Narrow-width fabric (fabric width 37-39 cm), 100% cotton. Soft texture achieved through the skilled handiwork of artisans and a manufacturing method that minimizes stress on the threads. Features a unique, artistic blurred appearance. [Specifications] The woven fabric shrinks by approximately 10% through a "steam treatment and natural drying finish." You can cut it immediately after purchase, so you can use it with confidence.
