Introduction to Kutani Ware Styles: Old Kutani (Kokutani) by Goto Saijiro (approximately 360 years ago) The early "Old Kutani" style was promoted by the Daishoji Domain around the Meireki era (1655). Under the guidance of Hisumi Morikage, a master of the Kano school of Japanese painting, it uses five colors: blue (green), yellow, red, purple, and dark blue. With its painterly, bold composition and free yet delicate lines, it can be said to be the most characteristic Kutani style.
Kutani ware is highly regarded worldwide as one of Japan's three major types of overglaze enamel porcelain, and as a representative traditional craft of Japan, known as "Japan Kutani."
