It is used in esoteric Buddhist rituals in the Shingon and Tendai sects, as well as in Segaki ceremonies in the Shingon, Tendai and Zen sects. Its basic shape is rod-shaped, with a handle (the onimoku) in the middle. The onimoku is visualized as Dainichi Nyorai, and practitioners grasp its bulge as a form of practice to become one with Dainichi Nyorai. It has spear-shaped blades on the top and bottom. There are several variations depending on the number and shape of the blades, each with its own name. The dokko vajra is a type of vajra hand, and represents the samadhi of Vajrapani Bodhisattva, piercing all things. It was used to make wishes come true, improve luck, ward off misfortune, and ward off evil. It can be carried as a talisman/keychain, or kept indoors.
